News from the ecoinvent Database

Dear ecoinvent user

As our yearly release approaches, we are reaching out to you with a sneak preview of what you can expect.

Upcoming Release

We are happy to announce that ecoinvent version 3.8 will be available in September 2021!

This year's updates are enhanced by a focus on user comfort.

Specifically, with the aim to facilitate the work of ecoinvent users, ecoinvent v3.8 will introduce:

Enhanced documentation with:

  • additional information on products, advanced dataset documentation reports and improved market definitions;
  • an enhanced and more complete activity overview file to accommodate data selection;
  • a detailed overview of the database's sectorial coverage offered on the upcoming new ecoinvent website.

The possibility to calculate emissions from electricity and other types of energy purchases according to Scope 2 and Scope 3 Guidance of the GHG Protocol.

The additional system model ‘Allocation, cut-off, EN15804’, which adjusts all datasets included in the ecoinvent database to comply with the amended EN15804 standard (EN15804&A2:2019) and with ISO 14025 and ISO 21930. This new system model supports an easier, standard compliant EPD practice.

The latest versions of ReCiPe and CML, and EF3.0 to support LCIA methods.

Additionally, v3.8 integrates new and updated data on bamboo value chains, electronics, metals, batteries and electricity market mixes. It also specifically adds data from Brazil on transport, fuel extraction and refinery.

The data used for the additions and updates were provided by various organisations including ETH, EMPA, Pforzheim University and ACV Brazil.
