Insights on the energy LCI data evaluation

A recent study on energy data commissioned by the EU's JRC presents an interesting view but also highlights room for improvement.

Last year, the EU's JRC published a Technical Report titled "Background analysis of the quality of the energy data to be considered for the European Reference Life Cycle Database (ELCD)" originally prepared by an independent consultancy. The report aimed to analyse strengths and weaknesses of the ELCD.

While the comparison of datasets from different databases was explicitly outside the scope of the study, and the study states that it cannot be used to compare databases, many comparisons of datasets do in fact happen. Unfortunately, an analysis of the report revealed some serious issues, including technical errors, flawed understanding of datasets and a mislabelling of external data as ELCD data within the study.

A summary of the analysis findings is presented in a 13-page report. We have already shared this analysis with the JRC, and as we have received a series of questions from users, we are now also sharing it with you. The report is available here.
