As the year 2016 comes to an end, and we begin our Christmas holiday, ecoinvent is happy to share the following news with our LCA community. We all wish you happy holidays and are looking forward to successful cooperation in 2017.

2016 in review

ecoinvent released the third update of ecoinvent version 3 in August this year. The release included a wide variety of updates:

  • The world food database. The WFBD introduced several hundreds datasets on agricultural products, as well as new technologies and categories.
  • Prices. Prices for all products were collected for version 3.3.
  • Markets and supply chains. We worked on improving supply chains, with a special interest on waste treatment activities in Europe and all supply chains for Switzerland.
  • PDF documentation. Easily consult unit process information as well as some key impact assessment results for each dataset by downloading the PDF documentation from the ecoinvent database online.

Important milestones in the SRI project

Sustainable Recycling Industries - Life Cycle Inventories (SRI-LCI) is a project funded by the Swiss State Secretariat of Economic Affairs (SECO) and is implemented by ecoinvent in India, Latin America (Brazil, Colombia, Perú) and South Africa. SRI-LCI has two main goals:

  • Enhance the local capacity for conducting LCA and generating and managing LCI data
  • Collecting and providing the regional LCI data of major background processes (electricity, transportation, construction) and important sectors in the regions

Several LCI data collection projects were kicked-off in 2016, targeting sectors such as coal mine operations, electricity generation and distribution, agriculture and animal husbandry, construction, textile, waste treatment and disposal, refinery industry and more.

Through the SRI project and collaboration with international and local experts from the regions, ecoinvent is expanding its geographical scope to include more representative, regional, and up-to-date data from regions outside of Europe. In 2017, SRI will continue to implement even more training and data collection projects. To find out more about the SRI program and stay updated about our upcoming activities please check the portal of the programme or the ecoinvent page on the SRI project.
